Part-time Personal Trainer

Guided by the mission of the YMCA, the Wellness Staff is responsible for instructing and reinforcing proper strength training procedures and maintaining a safe workout environment for all members, participants, guests and staff.
Essential functions of the job include:
- Instruct a variety of individual or small group exercise sessions for members.
- Plan and instruct progressive classes in a specialty area. Observe and discuss individual progress with participants. Motivate and guide individuals/groups and program participation. Ensure safe and effective classes; respond to and report any accidents or indients.
- Administer and evaluate health history questionnaires and other pre-participation documentation with regard to individual exercise programs. Administer and interpret health/fitness assessments. Track client progress and maintain appropriate documentation in participant files.
- Instruct individual clients in proper exercise technique and use of equipment. Develop and implement individualized exercise programs including cardiovascular, resistance training, flexibility, balance/stability, and postural components that provide optimum results for the client. Provide encouragement and support for the client and recognize the client’s strengths and weaknesses.
- Maintain required CEC’s and national certifications. Perform fitness center staff duties when not scheduled for personal training or fitness instruction classes.
- Report any equipment problems and ensure that faulty equipment is not used by members or staff.
- Trainers must work a minimum of 4 hours per week (i.e. working the wellness floor, doing exercise prescriptions, teaching boot camp, etc.)
- Goals will be set and obtained after your first 90 days.
- Attend staff meetings and other required YMCA staff meetings as directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Prerequisites:
- Minimum Age: 18
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent knowledge in Health/Exercise Science or related fiel preferred.
- Certs/Licenses: Personal Training Certification from one of the following: American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), American Council on Exercise (ACE), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) or National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).
- Current CPR/AED, and First Aid.
- Experience: 6 months experience in fitness instruction and/or personal training preferred but not required.
Other required skills:
- Knowledge in the areas of strength training and cardio/vasular/pulmonary functions.
- Basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology.
- An active and dedicated interest in modeling and encouraging a healthy lifestyle.
- Knowledge of fitness and free weight equipment instruction and techniques, including risk management.
- Strong verbal communication skills, both in person and over the telephone.
- Flexibility, adaptability, and patience to instruct all age groups and ability levels.
- Good judgement under pressure, with the ability to make timely and sound, informed decisions.
- Energetic interpersonal skills with willingness and ability to manage conflict, build and retain relationships with a diversity of members, guests, volunteers and staff.
